Today marks the 4 year anniversary of Ben asking me to marry him. Four years probably sounds like a long time to be engaged to some of you, especially considering we haven’t even started planning the wedding yet!! Although we knew we wanted to get married at some point, we also knew we weren’t ready for marriage just yet. That being said we got engaged anyway as, like I said, we knew we wanted to at some point and we just happened to be on the trip of a lifetime – the perfect setting to pop the question…
The contract that Ben was working on at the time came to an end and he got a large payout from it. We had two options – use that money to buy a house or go travelling for 6 months.. We knew if we bought a house now we likely wouldn’t get the chance to go travelling for a very long time, so we jumped at the opportunity to see a bit of the world.
You may have heard me mention in a few of my videos that we have been travelling (in fact I started making videos whilst we were away!), but for those that didn’t know, we spent a month in America (around the LA area mostly, although trips to San Francisco and Las Vegas were amazing), four months in Australia (mainly Sydney), and finally a month in Thailand going all over the place.
It was at Maya Bay in Thailand that Ben wanted to pop the question – you know, that famous beach from the film The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio. So he had been carrying around the ring with him for all this time. The day we took our trip to Maya Bay the water was a little choppy and unfortunately I get sea sick, so 10 minutes into our boat ride they had to turn it around and drop me back off at shore.. As you can probably tell Ben was a little annoyed to say the least! But he didn’t let on that he had planned on proposing to me there.
We carried on with our trip and everywhere was so beautiful. The last place we visited before flying home was Koh Samui. It was our last full day there so to make the most of it we hired a moped to get around the island. First stop was the Koh Samui Zoo – not the best place for animal treatment I’ll admit, but it was such an amazing experience as we got to hold a leopard cub and got to sit in a cage with a fully grown tiger!! Tigers are my favourite animal so having the chance to be that close to one was incredible although kind of scary!
After that we stopped for some lunch and then decided to try and make our way up the mountain… On a tiny little scooter. It cut out on us a couple of times, and at times the incline was too steep for it to carry both of us up so one would have to walk up whilst the other rode the moped up. Eventually we found our way to this little rock outcropping which overlooked the little towns and beaches below. It was so pretty so we sat for a while just basking in the fact that we were there and how amazing the trip had been. As we got up to leave Ben got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, and of course I said yes.
It’s been four years since that moment and our relationship has only grown stronger. We used to live an hours drive away from each other, only seeing each other at weekends which caused issues between us. Now we have our own little house and are much more settled in our lives together. We still have a lot to work on, neither of us is perfect (I don’t think anyone is really), but we are working on it together, figuring things out and trying to be better than the people we were the day before. We’re both at a stage now where we feel like we’re ready to make that move into the next stage of our relationship. I can’t wait to be married to this amazing man who really gets me, makes me feel so safe and loved and works so hard to make our life together the best it can be.
I just felt like sharing this story with you guys today to give you a little insight into my personal life. And Ben, if you’re reading this, thank you for all the amazing memories that I wouldn’t have had without you, I love you, happy anniversary!
