Review/NOTD: MUA Pistachio Ice Cream

I haven’t tried a whole lot from the brand MUA. I picked up a few makeup items towards the end of last year and was really impressed with them – if you’re interested you can watch my first impressions video here. Just recently I have been on the hunt for a pale mint green nail polish and rather than fork out £7.99 for Essie’s Mint Candy Apple that everyone and their sister seems to rave about, I decided to pick up this one from MUA.

MUA Pistachio Ice Cream

The colour is called Pistachio Ice Cream and although it’s not quite as bright as the Essie one it’s a really close dupe. The bottle, as I’m sure you will notice, is extremely similar to Essie’s, even down to the brand name embossed into the glass. The MUA one is a little smaller though and I have a side by side picture so you can see the difference/similarities.

MUA Pistachio Ice Cream

So as for the polish itself…. I have to say I didn’t love it straight away. First things first, the brush is VERY small – similar in size to something you would get with a miniature nail polish. I found I have to re-dip the brush in the polish and use several smaller strokes to coat each nail. Secondly, the formula is quite thin and very streaky, particularly if you like to apply thin coats. This is all starting to sound rather negative but… when I applied the second coat I went in slightly thicker as I didn’t want to sit painting my nails all night to get an opaque finish. This second coat really evened out the colour and left a beautiful, shiny cream finish. If you look closely you can still see a little bit of streakiness but it’s barely noticeable.

MUA Pistachio Ice Cream

On the whole I am once again really impressed with MUA and will be looking to pick up more polishes and makeup from them in the future. Let me know if there’s anything you think I should try. MUA polishes are available at Superdrug for £1.

Favourite Fall Nail Polishes

Favourite Fall Nail Polishes

As part of my #thefallinspired series I picked out my favourite lip colours for this season and this is the nail counterpart to that post. Some of these colours I have posted previously on Instagram so I have included those pictures below in case you haven’t seen them (you can follow me on Instagram here).

I’m actually craving much lighter, airier polishes lately but since I don’t own many of those colours I fell back to my staples for this time of year, which seem to include a number of purples…

Favourite Fall Nail Polishes
On my nails currently is Rimmel Deliciously Dark with 17 Cosmic Heather over the top. Unfortunately you can’t buy Cosmic Heather in store, which is a shame because it’s gorgeous and I haven’t found anything else like it. It’s a bronzy shimmer in a sheer purple base, great on its own but equally lovely over darker colours. Deliciously Dark is a long time favourite and is a deep eggplant purple with a cream finish.
OPI Dutch ‘Ya Just Love OPI – I think this colour is particularly appropriate for October. Something about the shade of purple just makes me think Halloween. Perfect if you want to wear something a bit more colourful without being too in-your-face bright. Perfect for if you are a bit bored of wearing darker colours on your tips.
OPI Meet Me On The Star Ferry – A lovely warm plummy-brown. This has a beautiful, almost metallic finish with a golden shimmer running through it.

Favourite Fall Nail Polishes
OPI The World Is Not Enough – This was part of the James Bond Skyfall collection and a huge favourite of mine last year. Pictures don’t do this colour justice. It’s a taupy-silver purple, a little on the sheer side, but it looks gorgeous worn sheer or built up to full opacity. It has a ton of shimmer in it which catches the light so beautifully.
China Glaze Midtown Magic – A blackened chocolate brown. This is one of those shades that is so dark it looks almost black from a distance. It’s not until you see it close up or it catches the light that you see the depth of the colour and the copper and gold shimmer.

Favourite Fall Nail Polishes
Essie Bordeaux – A beautiful, almost jelly finish blood red. This is my favourite pick of the bunch. I love Essie nail polishes and definitely want to expand my collection.
What are your nail polish picks for this season?

I have to say, as much as I’m looking forward to the Autumn/Winter seasons this nail polish just called out to me. I mean who could turn down this beautiful green-teal colour?!

I actually wanted to get just this colour from Essies’ new Summer collection but when I went to Boots they didn’t have it in stock. They only had the mini set, so in my eagerness to try this polish out I grabbed the set of 3 for £9.99 instead. You can buy the set here.
I haven’t tried Full Steam Ahead yet but I’ve got Sunday Funday on my toes, and even though its a lot sheerer it’s still a gorgeous colour that’s very appropriate for summer. But Naughty Nautical is definitely the winner from this collection in my eyes.

First off, the application is amazing. Even though its a mini polish the brush is full size and so easy to work with. The formula is incredible too, the colour glides on evenly and is so smooth and very almost opaque in one coat…. One coat!! I used 2 coats for the swatches so you get the full affect but you could easily get away with one slightly thicker coat. The polish looks like it has some fine silver glitter to it but you don’t notice it much on the nail and it doesn’t make it a pain to remove. It comes off very much like a cream finish would, the sparkle just adds something extra.
I will just say, the polish started chipping the following morning and by the following evening the polish on both my ring fingers had come clean off in one lot despite using Seche Vite. But I think that was more to do with what awful condition my nails are in rather than a reflection of the polish. But let me know if you have had a similar problem with your polish.
All in all I think this is a beautiful nail polish and one I would definitely recommend for the remaining summer months.
What’s your favourite colour from Essie’s Summer Collection?

Individual Essie nail polishes can be purchased from Boots for £7.99
